FAQs

What is the difference between individual/couples therapy and group coaching?

We offer both individual and couples therapy AND group coaching services. Our approach and goals with the client vary somewhat depending on which approach we are using. In general, however, both our therapy and coaching work involves meeting the client where they are, gaining insight into how they got there, and moving toward goals of empowerment for a better future.

A therapy client is seeking help with:

  • Emotional challenges (depression / anxiety / stress / overwhelm / perfectionism / grief)
  • Relationship challenges (marriage / extended family / divorce / infidelity)
  • Emotional and binge eating
  • Low self-worth

A group coaching client is seeking help with:

  • Weight loss and long-term maintenance
  • Healthy lifestyle habits
  • Motivation
  • Psychological barriers to getting healthy (negative self-talk / all-or-nothing thinking)
  • Getting through a divorce transition
  • Recovering from a break-up or infidelity

It is common for a client to start working with us for therapy services, and once our goals there are met, we switch to a group coaching focus (and vice versa). Each person has different issues and goals, and we tailor our therapeutic and group coaching approach to your specific needs.

When will I see change?

Many people scour the internet for the best “5 quick tips” guide for improving their mental health, losing weight, or getting in shape. On one hand, we believe we can see immediate change when we start to put time and effort into making changes. However, long-lasting change is an evolution over time that unfolds as you consistently act in new, more purpose-driven ways. Together, we can overcome psychological hurdles that have been keeping you from starting or maintaining positive changes. We will also set attainable goals to keep you moving toward your best, ideal self. We are committed to help you meet your goals as efficiently as possible, so you can get on with your life.

How long will it take to make lasting improvements?

The average length of treatment and coaching in our practice is about 12 – 20 sessions. However, we have clients we only meet with once or twice, and others we work with for years. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them. The length of time it takes to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek a change in the first place. We are happy to talk with you about what your goals for therapy or coaching are, so we can decide whether that would fit within our scope of clinical practice.

What types of clients do you work with?

We work with ADOLESCENTS, ADULTS, AND COUPLES of all backgrounds. Our specialities are improving self-worth, improving relationships, navigating life transitions with grace and growth, and living consistently healthier lives, healing from grief + loss, healing from divorce + infidelity, permanent healthy lifestyle change. We have been honored to work with highly motivated clients who are committed and invested in the work involved in their own personal growth.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medication alone cannot solve all issues. What medication does is treat the symptoms. Our work together is designed to explore the root of the issue, dig deep into your behavior and teach strategies that can help you accomplish your personal and/or relational goals. Medication can be effective and is sometimes needed in conjunction with therapy or coaching.

I want to get the most out of therapy / coaching. What can I do to help?

We are so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions! Your active participation and dedication is crucial to your success. After all, we (typically) only see each other for a session a week. We recommend that clients view therapy or group coaching as a short-term investment of time, money, and emotional energy. Setting the expectation that this is time for you to really work to finally experience the changes you’re seeking can help you get the most out of each session. This mindset can also help you better apply the insights gained in session to your regular life, and can shorten the number of sessions needed to experience lasting change.
