What to Expect from Your First Therapy Session | TN Mental Wellness

Nervous About Therapy? We’ll Walk You Through It.

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and if you're feeling a little nervous, that's completely normal. Whether you're seeking support for anxiety, stress, trauma, or just want to improve your overall mental well-being, your first therapy session is about creating a space where you feel comfortable.

At Tennessee Mental Wellness, we understand that walking into a new environment and opening up to a therapist can feel intimidating. That’s why we want to give you a clear idea of what to expect—so you can feel prepared, at ease, and confident about taking this step toward your mental health.

Before Your First Session

Scheduling & Paperwork

Once you’ve scheduled your appointment, you’ll likely receive intake forms to fill out ahead of time. These forms provide basic background information, including your medical and mental health history, any current challenges, and what you hope to gain from therapy. Don’t worry about having all the answers—your therapist will guide you through everything when you arrive.

Setting Expectations

Therapy is a judgment-free space. There’s no right or wrong way to do it. Some people come in ready to share everything, while others need time to open up. Your therapist's job isn’t to pressure you—it’s to meet you where you are and create a space where you feel safe to talk at your own pace.

During Your First Therapy Session

A Warm Welcome

From the moment you step into our office (or log into a virtual session), our goal is to make you feel comfortable. Your therapist will likely start with a few general questions to get to know you better and to understand what brought you to therapy.

Talking Through Your Concerns

Your therapist will guide the conversation, but you are in control of what you share. Some questions they might ask include:

  • What brought you to therapy?

  • How have you been feeling emotionally and physically?

  • Have you experienced therapy before? If so, what worked (or didn’t work) for you?

  • What are your goals for therapy?

If you’re unsure how to answer, that’s okay. The first session is about exploration, not perfection.

Establishing Goals & Next Steps

Your therapist won’t expect you to have everything figured out in one session. However, they will help you start thinking about what you’d like to get out of therapy—whether it’s learning to manage anxiety, improving relationships, working through past experiences, or simply feeling more like yourself.

This session is also a chance for you to ask questions. You should feel empowered to make sure this is the right fit for you. Therapy is a collaborative process, and finding a therapist you feel comfortable with is key.

After Your First Therapy Session

Processing & Reflection

Many people feel relieved after their first therapy session, while others may feel emotionally drained—both are normal. Therapy is a process, and each session builds on the last. It’s okay if you don’t have immediate clarity or solutions.

Planning for the Future

By the end of the session, you and your therapist will likely discuss next steps, such as scheduling future appointments and setting small, achievable goals. Some therapists may suggest techniques to try between sessions, like grounding exercises or journaling, but there’s never any pressure.
