Helping children ages 5-15 and their families to navigate life’s traumatic experiences
“I’ve heard there are troubles of more than one kind; some come from ahead, and some come from behind. But I’ve brought a big bat. I’m all ready, you see; now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!” Dr. Suess
Welcome! My name is Heather Harper. Welcome to my page. I am a pre-licensed therapist working towards licensure to obtain my LPC-MHSP under clinical supervision (Carlin Giles TN License #1812). I have been counseling part-time in Sumner County since 2019. Much of my therapeutic work has been with couples, families, and Children.
Tackling what feels really big and heavy at the moment, I assist children with finding their voices to name and express their feelings positively, so they feel seen and heard. I also enjoy working with parents to explore opportunities that work with their family system, to engage with their children, and shift the family dynamic in a positive way.
About Me
I am a child / play therapist! I love working with kids and their families to navigate life’s transitions, stressors, and adjustments.
As a parent of three children myself, I understand the struggles that parents and families face with what often feels like chaos. Specifically, as a parent of a child who has experienced significant medical trauma, I work with children ages 5-15 and their families to navigate life’s traumatic experiences.
Areas of Speciality
Our experiences in life can often shape who we are, but they do not have to define us. I specialize in working with children, adolescents, parents, and families to build better behaviors, communication, and overall relationships at home, at school, and with others. I am also dedicated to helping parents and families navigate behaviors at school associated with neurodivergence, anxiety, and depression.
My clients often struggle with adjustment, anxiety, depression, trouble communicating their feelings, and navigating stressors. I work with clients and their families to promote healthy coping strategies and build stronger connections and, ultimately, understanding.
My areas of specialty are:
- Children
- Young Teens
- Play Therapy
I specialize in helping clients with the following challenges:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Trauma
- Anger
- ADHD
- Neurodiverse Diagnoses
How I Help Clients Heal and Grow:
Children with symptoms of anxiety and/or depression due to trauma, ADHD and other neurodiverse diagnoses are my specialty. Because I treat each child on an individual basis, my approach to therapy is eclectic. Not all children enjoy games, art, or talking.
My therapy approach is not the same for each client I work with. I am a behaviorist and am deeply influenced by behavioral therapy, specifically Cognitive Behavioral. I approach clients with a trauma-informed lens and believe in understanding the attachment relationship in the family. I am a Brainspotting Practitioner (Level 1 Trained) and use this brain-based approach to healing trauma and improving behavior issues and anxiety.
One size does not fit all. I welcome you to reach out and see how I can facilitate healing for your child and your family.
Educational Path
I hold a bachelor's degree in Health and Human Performance from Austin Peay State University as well as a Master of Education from Trevecca Nazarene University in Educational Leadership—Administration and Supervision. My passion for empowering others for positive change led me to a 22-year career in Higher Education Administration.
Education is transformative and I believe in the ability to use our strengths to change the trajectory of our lives. During my post-secondary experience, I worked with various students and their families to navigate life transitions, adjustment disorders as well as anxiety and depression. Because of this work, I was compelled to return to school and obtain a second Master of Education in Mental Health Counseling through Lindsey Wilson College.
Personal Life
Outside of my work, I am a married mother to three children ranging in age from 14 years old to 7 years old. I live and work in Sumner County and I love our community. My family enjoys the lake and being together outside.
